Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi experienced an unexpected mishap during the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Paris. While proudly bearing the Italian flag, he lost his wedding ring in the Seine river.
Tamberi took to Instagram to share a heartfelt apology to his wife, Chiara Bontempi Tamberi. In his message, he expressed deep regret over losing the ring but found solace in the significance of its final resting place.
"I'm sorry, my love, I'm so sorry," Tamberi began. "Too much water, too many kilos lost in the last few months or maybe the irrepressible enthusiasm of what we were doing. Probably all three things, the fact remains that I felt it slip away, I saw it fly...A few moments that lasted forever."
Tamberi then found a silver lining in the situation. "But if I really had to lose it," he wrote, "I couldn’t imagine a better place. It will remain forever in the riverbed of the City of Love."
He adds, "And if you want, we will also throw yours into that river so that they will be together forever and we will have one more excuse to, as you always asked me, renew our vows and get married again."
Tamberi's poetic words touched the hearts of fans across the world. His wife Chiara replied in the comments, "Only you can turn something like this into something romantic".
Indeed, if there were medals for romantic gestures, Tamberi would take gold!
