Why is this unique? Moss Agate is a gemstone renowned for the greenish filaments that seem to resemble moss or lichen or other vegetation. Although it doesn't actually contain any organic matter – the green and red moss-like inclusions are formed due to trace amounts of metal present like manganese or iron that then turn into different colors depending on their oxidation state. Long used for ornamental purposes, some ancient cultures viewed moss agate as a healing stone and during the late 18th century, moss agate was widely regarded as a good luck stone in Britain. Specimens with strong clarity, color and pattern are the most prized.
